Education Systems Racism of in the United States - 1100 Words
Education Systems Racism of in the United States (Editing Sample) Content: Reflection Chapter 4Students NameInstitutional AffiliationThere has been a lot of friction when it comes to the racism in the education system of the education the United States. This is a problem that has been becoming more alarming each year and the numbers keep increasing. While the Civil Rights Movement paved way for legal acceptance of multiracial families,it also created a new set of struggles for those families. The Civil Rights Movement included various groups struggling for liberation and self-definitions such as Young Lords, the Chicano Movement, the Black Power Movement, the Asian American Movement, and the American Indian Movement (Harper, 2014). The most affected subgroup of this group has been the Black American community. This group has the largest number of dropouts with the worst performance for those who choose to stay and fight for their rights. Hence this issue has led to various discussions by different scholars to bring an insight to the issue as w ell as the possible ways to curb such discrimination (Quaye, 2014. P. 38).I have never listened about when I was in my country which is Saudi Arabia. I am glad that I am learning totally new experience which I have it from before. In the beginning, I was confused between ethnicity and racism. It was hard for me to differentiate between them. However, from the different researches that I have done, I have come to realise that being from a particular race is biological and there is nothing we can do about that. For example, if someone is white, then they will remain white until death. On the other hand, I have learned that ethnicity is all about culture, traditions and the language.I totally agree with Tatum 567s argument that the impact of racism is known to begin early in life. Even in our preschool years,we are often exposed to misinformation about people from other races. As well, there is still a great deal of social segregation in our community. Consequently most of the early inf ormation that we receive about others people racially, religiously,or socioeconomically different from ourselves does not come as the result of experience. People might be born in some country that is dominated by a particular race and will still be termed as foreigners because they are of different ethnicity. As a result, this turns out to be a perfect example of the existence of racism and ethnicity. In addition, the first five years of a child's life are equally important because they play a substantial role of shaping the childs future happiness, health, development and growth. It also determines the ability of the child to achieve from what they learn in school and the rest of the community in general. It is evident from recent research that the first five years of a childs development determine their brain development a lot, while the first three years are responsible for the childs brain architecture (Harper, 2014). Despite the fact that every year is equally important in the development of the child, the first five are very important because they determine who the child is going to be. During this age, the child is able to learn various social skills such as empathy and keeping boundaries. From a personal experience, I have a five-year old daughter. She always tries to follow me in every behavior. I am glad that I am here in the USA. We get a chance to communicate to people from other cultures which teaches us more about the idea of respecting one another. Most of the American citizens are white and therefore the minorities stand a chance of not receiving the best medical care as the natives. Research also shows that the minorities are less likely to apply for food stamps (Harper, 2014). I therefore, stand by the opinion of fully knowing what it means to white in the USA in regard to the available privileges. Based on a personal experience, most of the international students are bound to experience similar problems to the ones faced by the minority grou ps in the nation. A good example is visa restrictions to avoid deportation, the terms of getting internships, and the citizenship requirements when enrolling for most of the programs in the country. However, it is important to acknowledge that not all whites benefit from the above privileges equally. Some of the social economic factors benefit people in regard to social stratification regardless of their race. Among such factors are social sexual orientation, physical and mental health, age and gender among others. In any given situation, any human being is bound to feel less privileged because needs and wants cannot be fully satisfied.Hence, in an attempt to handle the issue of racial and ethnic discrimination, then it is important for institutions to come up with strategies that will end up benefiting the minorities just like the other native students. As a result, this will generally improve the state of the minority in the whole nation. This will be facilitated by the lessons o btained from previous. The flex model is a key example of how to develop multicultural competence. In this case an individual is able to maneuver across the different cultures and be able to interact with the people a...
